My father was a member of the 15th SOS from what I understand. He was a loadmaster on C-130's. He hasn't spoken of Vietnam in many years since I was little now that I'm older I would like to know things he wont speak of since it upsets him a great deal. All I can remember is he knew some gentlemen in the 5th Special Forces and something about a taco stand.

Maybe someone can Remember a John Kiernan? Maybe someone knows where I can find out something about the 15th SOS? any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Roy Salinas, KIA

Information from: Dennis Dobbs - d00126@yahoo.com

I am looking for anyone with information about SFC Roy Salinas. He was from Edinburg, Texas was assigned to A-238 Buon Blech in early 1968 as a light weapons man. Roy was KIA 01-16-71 with SF.

Someone on this board said it is a small SF world and he doesn't know how right he is. Roy was from a small town in South Texas just 4 miles from where I grew up. We were both assigned to A-238 at the same time in 1968. We were on operation just after Tet and he was pulled out for reassignment. That was the last time I saw anything of him.

All I can find is that he was KIA 01-16-71 at an undisclosed location possibly by friendly fire. If anyone knew him and what happened to him, please e-mail me

"I have agreed to try to help with providing data (dates and events) about the I Corps Mike Force for the producers of a TV special about the all of the Special Forces Mike Forces in Vietnam, corps by corps and country-wide. This is being done with the cooperation and support of the Mike Force Association, and I'm just a doofus from I Corps who answered a call from the MFA for help about MF up north. Now, I'm asking for help.

If you were in the Mike Force (anywhere at any time), know someone who was, or have some other source of data and information about dates and events, would you, could you put me in contact with them? And particularly if you can help with the I Corps thread. Time permitting, I'll be the data collection point and scribe, as needed. You'll get credit as a source, or full identity protection, whatever works for you--just name it! I was only there in 1966 and 1967, so I need help with data about the bigger and better picture. Names, email addresses, credit cards or real spending money (just kidding) would be appreciated. You know the drill.

Happy new year's folks. Hope some of you can point the way for me. Thanks and cheers!

Subj: Requesting Research Assistance

Am currently researching the conduct of a rescue mission resulting in the loss of a USAF Jolly Green Giant helo (call sign Jolly 26) on 9 Nov 1967.

JG 26 was attempting the night extraction in Laos of an five-man SF team (call sign Flatfoot) that had been surrounded by NVA. American SF team members were SP4 Joseph Kusick and SFC Bruce Baxter. Another Jolly (call sign Jolly 29) had effected pickup of the three indigeous team members, but suffered heavy damage and crash landed at Khe Sanh. JG 26 managed to pick up Kusick and Baxter, but was struck by an RPG upon liftoff, burst into flame, and crashed down a slope. All but the helo pilot, Capt Gerald Young, were killed and Capt Young later received the Medal of Honor for evading and leading enemy away from other rescue efforts.

My research shows two other ground teams (call signs Wonderful Time and Bulldog) were inserted into the crash area a couple of days later to recover and identify bodies. They accounted for all KIA and prepared bodies for evacuation, but ground action prevented extraction and remains had to be left behind.

Would like to contact anyone who may have been involved in this rescue and the attempted KIA recovery later on. More details can be found at the following web site:

www.scally.com/lorrie/mia.html

Thanks for any help you can provide.

UPDATE:

"I've obtained some names of the recovery team from a 5th SFG report dated Dec 67 that made the determination of KIA for the two lost SF men who were passengers on that Jolly Green.

The names are SGT Ronald L. Bock, MSG Loyd R. Fisher, and SFC Bruce L. Luttrell. All were TDY to FOB #1, C&C Det, 5th Special Forces Group. Would really like to hear from one of these gentlemen and get their account of the recovery effort.

Thanks! Jeff Nash"

I have missed my opportunity to ask him directly, as I left his funeral a few short hours ago. I am looking to talk with anyone who served with Major George Quamo in VietNam. I know he was reported missing in 1968 and his body was recovered in 1974. I know he was killed in a helicopter crash and that he participated in the Special Forces rescue at Lang Vei in
1968.

I have read excerpts of the book "Night of the Silver Stars," which describes the battle. In the various web tributes to Special Forces personnel who served at Lang Vei, it mentions Quamo rounding up a group of Special Forces commando volunteers from the MACV-SOG base at Khe Sanh and leading an "heroic" reinforcing rescue that allowed the Lang Vei defenders to evacuate.

Is there any person, or a place where I could find out more about Major Quamo, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm searching for any friends of Raymond P Loya, MSG. He passed away in 1977. I know he had a lot of friends. At the time he was also a member of the 7th Panama also a member of the USARSO parachute team. He was a lifer who spent tours in Vietnam, etc.. He had a very interesting career.

The reason I am searching is because, at an earlier time in my life in the early 70's he was introduced to me by my mother. He became my mothers fience for a time. After Vietnam he proposed to my mother again. Understand I was a fatherless kid. He made a very special impression on me. He treated me with respect and taught me to look at life in a whole new light. I loved him, and he made me proud. He took me fishing with a friend, a fellow Green Beret. I only know him by the name of Frank. He also served with my mothers sisters husband, Thomas Melgares. He is also a Green Beret with an impressive career, retired SGT Maj. He is still living in El Paso, TX.

When I was a boy the movie The Green Berets aired on regular TV for the first time, we watched it together. I did'nt really pay a whole lot of attention to it. At the end of the movie when John Wayne puts the beret on the little boy, it makes me very emotional. It took me years to understand that it reminded me. When my mother and I would pick him up at the airport, when he came to stay with us, he would put his green beret on my headl, just like that little boy. My mother and him broke apart and I did'nt see him for a few years after that. I was in junior high by then. I wrote him a letter telling him how much I missed him. He wrote me back saying he would come visit me and my mother on vacation. He returned for a short visit. I was glad to see him, my mother also.

Shortly afterward, his sister called and said he had passed away on active duty in Pamama. It had a major effect on my life. I'am also a veteran of military service and I think of him often. I remember that I had asked him on more than one occasion about his military experience, particularly Vietnam. His only answer to that was, I was a bartender. I also remember that he drove us to Martha Rae's house in the Hollywood Hills. I would really dig to hear from someone, anyone, who served with him. If you have any information on the life of Raymond P Loya, It would fill a big space in my heart.

Thanks,
Rod

Jerry Lynn Smith, KIA May 25, 1970, died in hospital in Phu Bai

I am looking for anyone who might have information on my brother, 1LT JERRY L. SMITH, from Knoxville, TN, especially anyone who might have worked in the Army hospital in Phu Bai during the period April-May, 1970. Jerry was wounded on April 6, 1970 at Thua Thien, SVN (per THE WALL website) and was sent to a hospital in Phu Bai, where he died on May 25, 1970. The information (in my recollection) we were given by the Army at the time of his death does not seem to match the information contained in the WALL website, and I am looking for anyone who might have known him or is able to shed more light on Jerry's life and death in VN. Also, a few years ago, there appeared on his grave a Bronze Star and we don't know who put it there or what the circumstances were. Anyone having information on that or who might know where I could inquire to find out, I would really appreciate your responding. And to al! l who have labored to remember the veterans of Viet Nam and all wars, please accept my heartfelt gratitude.

If you don't already, I hope you have a back up person to continue to maintain this very important role of history through this website. I am a storyteller, my parents are still very active with American Legion, VFW and they go the VA in Temple, TX to do volunteer work. So, I believe I understand your mission. I visited Darnell Army Hospital (Fort Hood, Tx) during the holiday season as part of the Delta Theta Kappa (Service Sorority), while in college visiting some of our boys. I also did my college work-study program at the Killeen USO. Usually at Christmas I perform at Fort Parker, an old Fort near the Mexia/Goesbeck area in Texas. I dedicate the telling of a story title "The Very First Christmas Tree" to all soldiers, especially those who served in Viet Nam. I will share this website, with other friends who served. I honestly appreciate you and our other "boys" and your service to our country.
Respectfully Submitted.

My step brother was in the 5th SFG stationed out of Da Nang in 1970-71. He gave me a cigerette lighter with a Skull in a Green Beret and lightening around it. He never spoke about his tours in Nam. However, I now find out why. I believe he was in MACVSOG and couldn't say much. I have lost contact with him the last several yrs. Last I heard he was in Vancouver Wa. His name is SSGT. Franklin G. Withrow. I know that this is just a shot in the dark; but maybe someone know of him and could fill me in on his time in Nam or knows for sure of his wherebought. Thanks much for this site: Sam Williams

Hello,
Thankyou and welcome home!
I hope you might be able to help me with gaining some information regarding my cousins service in Vietnam.
Sgt. Steven Roy Luther of Whittier California served with company C 5th Special forces and 7th Special forces from October 1969 until September 1970.
The family say Steven never said much about his service in Vietnam as per his orders at the time and thats just how he was anyway, never blowing his own trumpet as the saying goes.
Steven sadly died in 1992 about three months after his Father Jack (ww2 comp.B 506th Inf.101st Airborne Div.)
I am in the process of peserving the whole families millitary history and any help would be greatly received.
Many thanks for your time,
Rob Cobley.

I never had the opportunity to spend much time with my older brother, Gordon [Strickler], after he enlisted in the Army. I know he served a couple of tours in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces in the 1968-1970 timeframe and is mentioned briefly in Leigh Wade's book about the 1970 NVA assault on Dak Pek.

My sons have started asking me questions about their Uncle, he died in 1980, and I'm looking for any stories people may have that I could share with my three boys. Any information about him will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ... Scott Strickler

I'm gathering information of a dear old familly friend who died in Vietnam in 1969. He was a part of 5th SF MACV-SOG operating out of FOB-2 Kontum. I believe A Company Hatchet force but I've also seen B company??? He was 20 years old, named Wayne Marshall Anderson "Andy" Ranked Staff Sergeant.

Wayne was killed while on mission into Laos on December 3, 1969.

I have found and spoken with Sgt. Robert (Hulk) Seper who was there that day and also with SFC. Adolph Straussfogel. Both of who were very kind to me and helping me put some pieces together around Wayne's passing. I also know Wayne was very close to Terry "Minnie" Minnihan who also served with him in A Company Hatchet force
As well I have been in touch with Kyle "Twiggy" Dean and Frank Greco, both of who have been extremely helpful.

I'm sure you can understand that the only way to find information about something that wasn't supposed to exist can be tough. Lots of knocking on doors and trying not to intrude on peoples privacy.

I never had the honour of knowing Wayne. Wish I had though. I wasn't even born until 1973.

All I can say without going too far into it is that Wayne had a very profound influence on my familly and his untimely death still grips all at this time of year.

I have a single picture of him since my familly sent all his belongings they had of him down to Wayne's mother a few years back........seemed like the right thing to do. I've attached this for you to see. Unfortunately it's from the obituary but maybe his face might ring a bell. It is my hopes to write about the life of Wayne. His childhood is easily accessible through my familly and his but his service in the war is really hard to find info on.

If you knew Wayne, I hope you may have some memories of him you would be willing to share. If you never knew him then I thankyou for reading this and getting to know a little more about one of your long missed comrads.

Jim Meade is looking for information about an article that

"Sean Flynn did about the III Corp Mike Force at Duc Phong that caused the s--t to hit the fan. I've been trying to find the article that he published in Paris Match magazine, with a photo, that caused all sorts of problems. I know our Sgt Maj had it but he passed away (last Jan) before I got the chance to ask him for a copy. The photo showed what was purportedly a dead vc hanging from a tree by his heels with a couple of the SF guys standing next to him. I'm trying to put together a story that the SF were shafted on that one."

"I was with Sgt Snyder when he was wounded. I also saw him right before he went back to VN and was killed. We had run into one another at the shopping center. I told him that maybe without my being there with him, he wouldn't have to worry about being shot again. How wrong I was. It was devasting for me when I received word of his death. I truly looked up to this man and have never forgotten him. He was a tower of strength to an 18 year old boy trying to fill a mans shoes."

I’m a 33-year-old major of the Swiss Armed Forces, branch artillery (M-109). My job is to instruct future artillery officers. Last year, I started to collect Zippo lighters, especially those from the Vietnam war.

Recently, I could buy a Vietnam zippo lighter of a former member of the Special Forces in Vietnam (see attachments). On the front are the following engravings: "KENDALL", "B-24 A-244", "5TH SPECIAL FORCES GROUP", "1ST SPECIAL FORCES" and "VIET NAM". On the back is a combat medic badge and a map of Vietnam.

I would be very glad the get more information about this veteran (rank, MOS, ...).

One thing I'd like to say: I've no financial interest because I'm just collecting these very interesting lighters with their own history.

If you like and find the time, please visit my homepage: www.gersters.ch.

Thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,
Rolf Gerster, Major GS Swiss Army (rolf.gerster@datacomm.ch)
