I have had several people write to me requesting information of various
sorts. It's usually people looking for someone who knew a friend or relative
that was in Viet-Nam. More often than not I am unable to answer the inquires.
So, I decided to start this page in hopes that someone out there can supply
that information. (To those of you who wrote early on and I've lost the
request for information, I apologize. If you see this and write me, I'd
be more than happy to post it.)
If you have any questions about VN, send them to me and I'll be happy
to post them. Someone who knows the answer to your inquiry or knew your
friend or loved one, is likely to come by and write to you. (Let me know
when and if you want your query taken off the page.)
To those of you who know of good general resources (on the net or otherwise)
where people can find out about individuals that served in VN, please
let the rest of us know about them.

We are looking for some folks we were stationed with along the lines.
Some of the best years of our life were spent in Special Forces.
We celebrated our 47th years together this last year. After his

they worked with the Yards up there on a Mission a couple of times.
One mission i remember that i would like to find out about or who
i worked with or what they where called anyway , i believe one Lieutenant
nickname was the (( Hulk)) he got hit and i pulled him and some
other guys out of Cambo in the middle of the night with a 100 ft
rope and i was hoping i wouldt drag him through the tops of the
Trees. We had loaded up the Equiptment at Bien Hoa went to the Border
set up camp the we flew to get the Cidg and i think they were Cambo
Mercinaries?? we where getting hit in the daytime once in awhile
. Anyway just like to know if anybody remembers that . Or who they
were. Also i went to pick up a lot of those Cambo at a fight in
Tay Nigh or someplace aroung there a lot of those guys where with
on that other misson and got shot up pretty bad , i did a lot of
work with those Men of the 5th Special out Bien Hoa . I just would

I was a crew chief on a 1st Cav Huey in Mar.'68 when we were
detached to support SF missions out of FOB 5, in Phu Bai. We made
two extractions from the A Shau Valley and the aircraft was shot

still around, or are any who served out of that FOB which I remember

Ist Force Reconnaissance need a bit of back up from the
I CORPS A-team members.
As you all know we have a page on Force Recon on the Gia Vuc website
as they pulled some time at G-V and other A camps http://www.gia-vuc.com/forcerecon.htm
One of their members Ray Rossi is trying to piece together their involvement
in the Operation Starlight which took place in September 1965 (which
has also been called the Battle for Chu Lai) and which took place
off the Batangan Penninsula.
Ist Force Reconnaissance operated out of
Gia-Vuc,
Bato,
Kham-Duc
Tra-Bong
prior to Starlight.
So we are looking for any information, recollection from team members
from the above camps ,
time frame we are talking around APRIL 1965 to DECEMBER 1965.
So regarding Gia Vuc the relevant Teams are
A-112 ( UNFORTUNATELY HAVE NOW LOST CONTACT WITH AATTV Adviser Alec
Morris, AND NO CONTACT WITH ANY OF IT'S US TEAM MEMBERS YET)
A-113 (mainly)
A-103,
Also some of your buddies may have served at Bato, Kham-Duc or Tra-Bong
during that time and they may have some information or may remember
these Marines?
So please be kind enough to pass that e-mail ! (more info on Force
Recon on the website, see link above)
and to contact me info.gia-vuc@tiscali.co.uk
or Ray Rossi direct at ross1stfr@npgcable.com

Good day pardner;
I recently returned from a business trip to Saigon. This was my first time back since 1970 when I was an FO with 3rd bn 5TH Marines in SW of DaNang. Never having been to Saigon it was not the flashback time I remember from the....Well war stories who needs 'em.
I had a customer translator whose father was a translator for A431 Co. B 5th SFGA and had a letter of reference signed by A Lt Joe Beets the XO.
Nguyen Van Chan evidently did well for Lt. Beets and after we left spent a few years in the tiger cages then was able to find menial work to keep his family alive. He died 3 years ago of a stroke. His son, Now the district manager of Unilever, knowing I was a US Marine Vietnam Vet as is proudly displayed on a backpack patch gave the attached reference letter to see if Lt. Beets was still alive. He wants some more information on his father. The son, Nguyen Tri Than was born in 1978. Surprisingly 80% of all Vietnamese were born after 1975. He works in the Cu Chi Industrial park. How strange is that.
So lend an old Marine a hand and see what you can unearth.
I have contacts in the Corps big Brother was a Colonel after Khe Sanh mustanger but have no SFG contacts.

I served with the 5th Special Forces C Team in Nha Trang in the set up stage from November 1962 -63 and have often wondered what happened to the people I served with. I did find Estep on this web site and learned that he returned as the leader of an A team but nothing more. Unfortunately, as I grow older I can only remember a first or last name in many cases or I can't remember the spelling of a name. If anyone would like to get in touch with me please feel free to do so; this includes anyone from the 7th at Fort Bragg. I would love to know how your time in Vietnam impacted your later life. My Vietnam experience greatly influenced my career choice and experiences. I have nothing but respect for our military, especially Special Forces. |
