FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. Three soldiers killed last week in Afghanistan were hailed yesterday as heroes for their part in helping to free an oppressed nation.
"Children are able to laugh, play and sing because of what they did," Lt. Col. Frank Hudson said during a memorial service at Fort Campbell.
More than 300 persons attended the service at Memorial Chapel for Master Sgt. Jefferson Davis, 39, of Watauga, Tenn.; Staff Sgt. Brian Cody Prosser, 28, of Frazier Park, Calif.; and Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Petithory, 32, of Cheshire, Mass.
Excerpts from Washington Post article 10 Dec 01
...hearing that final roll call, followed by "Taps" and a 21-gun salute, painfully underscored the fact that soldiers don't always come home.Mourners talked about serving with the men in faraway places and going through military training together. But that wasn't what dominated the service. The three men were recalled for more than their Special Forces service -- as friends, neighbors and husbands who enjoyed the freedoms they fought to protect.
Sen. Fred D. Thompson (R-Tenn.) said the nation was also grateful to the men. "These young men represented the best of America," he said. "They died defending freedom in a lonely place on the other side of the world."
