Comments: Most Special Forces soldiers know me by my American nickname, "Tex". I am a Montagnard of the Rhade tribe. My family name is Nay and my first name is Hor. In Vietnam, I write my name Nay Hor, but now that I am in the U.S., I write my name as Hor Nay.
I worked with the Special Forces as a translator for 7 years.
I was wounded from a mortar shell explosion while on patrol. One American soldier and three South Vietnamese soldiers were also wounded; one South Vietnamese soldier was killed. A chopper airlifted us up through the jungle canopy to hospitals. I was in a Vietnamese hospital for six months, but my cheekbone was badly broken and was not getting better.
My American friend, SFC Timmons came and got me. He took me to the American hospital; the surgeons used a metal plate to repair the bones. While I was in the hospital, SFC Timmons took rice to my wife and young son. It is now 30 years later, but I have not forgotten this great kindness.

If you worked w/SF: My picture can be found on this website. See Ed Sprague's Montagnard Pages (there is a link on the homepage). The picture is titled, "Returning from Patrol. A-226. 1966". Ed Sprague is the American soldier in the front on the right. I am the Montagnard soldier in the front on the left with the M2 carbine at the ready. The URL is:

Here is a partial list of the American soldiers I worked with as a translator:
62-63 Bon Beng camp. Captain Stoneur.
63-64 Kannack camp. Captain King. Captain View. Captain Ranger. 1st Lt. Web.
64-65 Mai Linh camp. Captain Gregor (Geoger?). Captain Nigh. Ed Sprague.
65-67 Mike Force. Pleiku. Captain Dod. Captain Picked (Pickett?). Major Lundy. SFC Timmins. SFC Bourne. SFC Frox. Sgt Gates. SFC Pall.
67-69 B50 Company. Banmethuot. Major Lomar. Captain Hass. SFC Stay. Sgt Barker.

After the war, I was in a reeducation camp for three years.

I arrived in the U.S. in mid-2002. I now live in Raleigh, NC. As you may know, there are now 4,000 Montagnard refugees living in Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro, NC. The Special Forces soldiers continue as our friends here.
