I Spent at least a month or more at Loc Ninh, Bunard, Chi Linh and Katum, right after
TET 1968. Me and 5 other guys would fly in on a C-123, replace fw gas, more wire and try
to redo the runways. Then we went on to the next one for a month.
It was good duty. We all liked it, but I do have some bad memories of Bunard. It was a hot
little place after TET.
I did 2 tours in Nam. '68 and '69. First was in the Jungle Eaters: 168th Engr. 27th Land Clearing Task Force... all in III Corps. Then we disbanded the 27th and I went to A Co. 168th and was a Demolition Specialist. Base camp was Lai Khe and Quan Loi, but didn't spend too much time there.
I was attached to 1st Div and 25th and did a couple of Ops for III Corps Mike Force. Just blowing arms caches and bunkers. One of the M.F. Sgts gave me a complete uniform in '68 with patches and red white& blue scarf, but I lost it all later. Found Mike force patches in Saigon my last trip there and bought two of them.
I've been back over the Pond 5 times now. I really like it there and plan on going again next Jan. My wife went with me last time and now she wants to go every year. I usually stay 2 weeks, rent motor bikes and travel III Corps.
I tried to find Prek Kloc this last time, but it kinda disappeared. I did find an AK-47 in Loc Ninh, but the stock was gone and the rest of it was pretty rusted.
Hwy #13, "Thunder Road", is paved from Saigon all the way to Bu Dop, now.
