Teams/Camps in SE ASIA: B-57 and Company E (Signal Company) of 5th SFGA at 5th HQ in Nha Trang from 11-68 until 7-69.
Comments: I was a Cornish commo student at Ft. Bragg and believe I was in the original class with about 12 others in 1967. If you are not familiar with the Cornish system of Morse Code it was a word association system and students were able to meet the Army's minimun standards of copying and sending with 2 hours of training per day for about 8 weeks instead of the normal 8 hour training days for 16 weeks(?). I would love to hear from any fellow Cornish students whether they were in my class or whether they remember me or not. I think there was about 6 classes trained in 1967-68 and I served in Nha Trang with 3 or 4 of them. I recall John Adams, Fred Moreno and Mike Mcdowell by name and there may have been others I have now forgotten.
If you worked w/SF: I was first assigned to B-57 as a radio operator at 5th
HQ in Nha Trang and worked from a location in the same building that housed
the MARS station. In my spare time I recall voluntering to run telephone patches
for SF members back to the states thru Ham operators located in southwestern
USA. My last assignment was as a radio operator in the HQ radio command bunker
making daily contacts with all the A & B teams thruout SVN. After ETS in
July, 1969 I went back to college and later joined SF in a reserve capacity
and was a radio operator with the 11th SF Reserve Group in Winston-Salem, NC
assigned to ODA-335 until became disabled with arthritis.
I also was assigned to the 6th SFGA at Fort Bragg after completing training
group in 1967 and I was assigned TDY to the Cornish Commo School where I help
train other Cornish students until I was finally able to get Ms. Alexander in
the Pentagon to give me an assignment with the 5th Group in SVN. Additionally
when I arrived in country at Cam Ranh Bay my orders were changed to an assignment
with the 25th Infantry Division in Chu Chi and I had to call 5th HQ and get
my orders changed because I was about to become a "leg" without even
volunteering. Needless to say the 5th Group came across and send an NCO from
HQ to pick me up. I am going back to VN in November as part of a tour of 5 other
countries in Asia and plan to make stops in Nha Trang and old Siagon. I was
surfing the web for information and pictures on 5th Group in SE Asia and found
your site. Boy did it bring back memories from the past.
