LIFE MEMBER SFA
[Polei Kleng] I was the CA/PSY Ops Officer with the original team that went in to build the camp early Feb 66. Team Sgt was Charlie Phillips, Team Commander was Captain Monroe. Team XO was 1lt Evanoff.
What a great adventure, and beautiful location (scenery) We were in a valley at the intersection of two valleys. One was north south the other from west to east. Lots of water, fish, fruits and vegetables. The LLDB team leader was the XO when Plei Me was hit and Col Donlon was awarded the MOH. His assignment as commander apparently was because of his "heroic action" during the siege.
Our camp was underground and triangular in shape. I worked very closely with the little people from four different tribes. We had two companies of Sedang tribesmen and eventually were able to recruit two more companies from other tribes. Our location was adjacent to an old French camp where barbed wire and mines were still visible. With the help of Engineers we were able to put in an airfield just as the rainy season began and "Playboy" was the name of the first Caribou to land. Later others got stuck and what a panic that created.
