SOG: Originally called Special Operations Group and commonly refered
to (by those who knew of its existence) as SOG. The name was later changed
to Studies And Observations Group. SOG was formed in January 1964 with
Special Forces, Navy Seals and Air Commandos who had been training infiltrators
for the CIA. *
"...Fall of 1967 and into early 1968, SOG formally absorbed the
5th Special Forces Group's old Projects Omega and Sigma, whose men,
on loan to SOG, had been penetrating Daniel Boone targets." SOG
was then divided into 3 FOBs; Command and Control North (CCN),
Command and Control Central (CCC) and
Command and Control South (CCS).**
* SOG,
By John L. Plaster, The Penquin Group, 1997. pp22-23.
** ibid. p111.
"MACVSOG was closed down in April 1972 and we reverted to STDAT-
158, we [MSG Estrada and Capt. Kainu] were assigned to Advisary Elment
GP-68. We closed down in Feb 73 they all went to NKP in Thailand."
MSG Pete Estrada, Ret.
"SOG recieved over 2000 individual awards including 10 Medals
of Honor and 23 Distinguished Service Crosses."
The Drop (Special Forces Association Magazine) Summer 2001 P4.
NOTE: All former SOG soldiers who've written to this web site are listed
on this page-alphabetically. Those who specified an FOB, are also listed
in their respective area(s). If I have omitted anyone,
lost anyone's information, mistaken any of the information, or if anyone
has additional information about SOG, please let me know.
