* The 8231st was the first SF Det in The Far east. It was formed in the 77th SFG in early 1956, and covertly sent to Japan. Originally stationed in Hardy Barracks in downtown Tokyo and later moved out to Camp Zama. It consisted of 20 NCO's and 5 Officers. With LTC Shannon commanding. 8231 was the cover designation for a modified B team and an A team. We were under operational control of the Combined Command for Recon Activities Far East. (CCRAFE). The following year the Det was relocated to Okinawa and along with a team from Hawaii formed the cadre for the 1st SFG.
